SHG Press Release

HE Governor Capes this week represents St Helena at the Foreign Office’s Joint Ministerial Council (JMC) at Lancaster House in London (4-5 December), where he is joined by Councillor Derek Thomas.  Formerly the Overseas Territories Consultative Council, the JMC now forms the annual meeting between the UK and its Territories and reflects the aspiration expressed in this year’s White Paper of equal partners discussing matters of mutual interest, agreeing priorities and developing plans for implementation.

In providing a forum for the exchange of views on political and constitutional issues between the Governments of the Overseas Territories and the UK, the Council reflects the vision for the Territories as vibrant and flourishing communities, proudly retaining aspects of their British identity and generating wider opportunities for their people.

Under the banner of the overall UK/Overseas Territories relationship, key areas for deliberation this week include constitutional issues and self-determination, building successful economies and supporting small businesses, plus support from the EU, the Commonwealth and other international organisations.

Also on the agenda are strengthening community cohesion and tackling disadvantage, providing healthcare to isolated communities, safeguarding children and building Human Rights capacity, cherishing unique environments and sharing best environmental practice, together with raising educational standards and capacity, legal issues and a fair justice system.
The Overseas Territories Joint Ministerial Council will conclude on 5 December by agreeing a Communiqué.

This week also sees Julian Morris, Chief Executive of Economic Development, in the Falkland Islands, where his agenda focuses on forging stronger economic links with St Helena and discussions on investment opportunities.
