74 from Darrel Leo, and a hat trick from Sanjay Clingham, helped Levelwood All Stars begin their title defence with a 38 run victory over St Matthews Lions, in the first competitive game of the 2012/13 cricket season.
Novembers first weekend saw the appearance of summer sunshine, and the start of the 2012/13 cricket season.
The season's curtain raiser saw the St Helena International team do battle against a Captains X1, in a 40 over exhibition match on Saturday. The international team ran out comfortable winners against the captains X1. Scott Crowie made an Unbeaten 141, Andrew Yon 54 and Dax Richards 53, as the International team amassed 355 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. In reply the Captains X1 were bowled out for 187. Sandy Bay Pirates Captain Lynton Fowler top scored with 33.
Sunday morning saw the start of competitive league matches. Levelwood All Starz began their title defence against St Matthews Lions.
Lions saw the return of a number of key players. Captain Patrick Crowie returned to the side after injuries forced him out of the 2011/12 season, and so did Alex Langham who sustained a cruciate knee ligament injury in the 2011 football season. The return of wicket keeper Trevor Francis was also a major boost to the side. On the other hand, All Starz found themselves playing their first game in a while without Delroy Leo. Will All Starz miss the regular match winning performances from the talented all-rounder? I’m sure we’ll find an answer as the season progresses.
The Lions won the toss and elected to field. All Starz lost opener Ross Henry in the 3rd over and a steady flow of wickets thereafter meant they were well and truly under pressure. However Captain Darrel Leo came to the rescue and batted for the All Starz entire innings to make and impressive 74 runs of his teams total of 172. On his debut, Jordan Yon was the Lions best bowler returning figures of 3 for 33.
In reply Lions got of to a steady start. Nick Stevens batted for 23 over's to make 26 runs, and a brief 35 run cameo from Alan Thomas saw Lions to 123 for 4, a good position to chase down All Starz total. However a Hat Trick from Sanjay Clingham saw him return figures of 3-26 and the Lions Crumble to 134 all out.
Match Result; Levelwood AllStarz 19 points, St Matthews Lions 8 points. A full match report and pictures will be featured in this week's Sentinel.
