Alfreda Yon

SHG Press Release

Alfreda Yon, Manager (Projects & Corporate Procurement) in the Corporate Procurement Unit, has been awarded a Level 5 Diploma (equivalent to a First Degree) in Project and Programme Management with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Her course was funded by SHG via Distance Learning.

The Diploma consisted of the following units:

  • Business Context (Strategic Planning)
  • Principles of Programme and Project Management
  • Risk Management
  • Quality Management
  • Change and Configuration Management
  • Managing People
  • Supplier Management Overview (Contract Management)
  • Integrative Assessment
  • Programme Planning
  • Programme Monitoring and Control
  • Project Planning
  • Project Monitoring and Control
  • Projects and Programmes with PRINCE 2

After each unit an assignment had to be submitted, and for most of these not less than 5000 words were required, excluding annexes. For the Integrative Assessment, a written assignment had to be submitted and an Intercall session was arranged with members of the Association of Project Management (APM) in which understanding of the Diploma had to be demonstrated though a professional interview.

Alfreda said, ‘Attainment of this Diploma will enable me to perform my role more confidently and with the knowledge gained I am able to:

  • Understand the business, social and political contexts that affect the management of programmes and projects,
  • Develop a focussed and disciplined approach to developing and implementing plans and controls in programme and project management
  • Apply a range of methodologies to programmes and projects
  • Enhance communication techniques and use information more effectively
  • Improve team and individual performance

The entire Diploma required commitment and perseverance.  At the time of studying I had to juggle quite a demanding job and had to accommodate most of the study at home.
I am very pleased with the result; even though my assignments were completed over 6 months ago, the wait has been worth it.’

Charlene Farley, Tutor from The Projects Group, said:

‘Alfreda should be exceptionally pleased with her achievement, as an astonishing number of delegates who start their studies do not actually finish due to the sheer amount of work involved. Well done for persevering and Congratulations!’

Dr Corinda Essex, Director of Corporate Procurement, stated, ‘I have always had complete confidence that Alfreda would gain her Diploma. She deserves to feel very proud of her achievement and is already putting what she has learned into practice.  Her success is a shining example to other young professionals on St Helena.’
