Harts began the second round of league fixtures with a hard fought, 3-2 win over Bellboys, on Saturday 7 July. Conditions for this match were pretty awful, powerful winds throughout and on/off sheeting rain.
The scoring was opened as early as the 5th minute, when Scott Crowie put away a penalty for Bellboys.
Harts worked hard to get back into the game with midfield duo, Alonso Henry and Ryan George linking together well. Striker Michael Williams pulled the blues level after 22 mins, reacting first to a deflected clearance and firing Harts level from a tight angle.
The game continued to be strongly contested throughout the field, Bellboys putting up a brave show against the more experienced Harts. Ryan Benjamin played up front in this match with Anthony ‘Nails’ Thomas taking his place in centre midfield. Out on the right wing, Josh Young provided great width as usual with his tireless running.
With seconds left on the clock before half time, Rico ‘Chico’ Williams put Harts ahead, 2-1, with a neat, side foot finish across the keeper.
Bellboys turned up the pressure in the second half, but found keeper Damien O’Bey in top form, pulling off a string of magnificent saves to keep Harts in the game. However, on 82 mins, a long free kick into the box eluded the onrushing Bellboys strikers but it was enough to distract O’Bey and the ball found its way into the back of the net for 2-2.
The scoring ended as it had started, with a penalty, this time for Harts. Michael Williams was brought down with 4 mins remaining and Eugene Williams beat Leroy Caswell in goal from 12 yards to seal the win for Harts.
“They had the advantage of the wind in the second half,” said Eugene Williams afterwards, “but it was a good game. I wasn’t nervous taking the penalty. You have to go in there with a clear head.”
