NEW CORONER ON ST HELENA

Derek Richards was appointed as Coroner for St Helena Island on Monday 18 June. He took the Oaths of Office in the Governor's Office at the Castle, Jamestown.

Richards is the General Manager of Services for Solomons & Company and has an extensive background in management, as well as emergency and technical operations.

Richards was approached by the Office of the Chief Secretary and after some research felt he could contribute to the role and accepted the appointment. "The coroner's role is quite important and comes into play when somebody dies suddenly or there is an unknown reason for death," said Richards. "The coroner has a very important role to play in determining the cause of death on the evidence that is presented to him. I'm looking forward to the challenge that this will provide me." We asked about training. "I'm hoping there is some training. There is a new Chief Magistrate arriving and I'm hoping this is where the training will come from."

There are two coroners on St Helena the other being Jack Horner.
