Africa Day on St Helena
Africa Day being celebrated on St Helena

Sharon Henry, SHBC

On Saturday night 26 May St Helena joined in Africa Day celebrations, (only the second time on the island) organised by its contingency of local Africans, at Donny’s Place and the Pink Flamingo at 7pm.

Africa Day is commemorated annually around the world on 25 May to celebrate the diversity and culture of the nation.

A buffet of exotic foods from across the African continent was laid out for all to sample.  Omotuo (rice balls) from Ghana, Vetkoek from Namibia and Isitshwala from Zimbabwe were just a few of the many culinary delights prepared by our African residents, who were attired in African dress as they served the meals.

Donny’s was tropically decorated with palm and bamboo leaves and strings of African flags flapped in the wind.  In keeping with the theme the distinct beats and rhythm of African music kept dancers happy and the barmen busy throughout the evening.

More news and pictures from this event will be in issue 10 of The Sentinel, out 31 May 2012.
