Digital Television for St Helena

Sharon Henry

Television entertainment on St Helena is set to have fifteen new digital TV channels that is planned by Cable & Wireless to be made available by the end of April.

The new TV package is likely to include BBC Entertainment, BBC World, Discovery, Disney, M-Net, M-Net Movies and additional Super Sport channels. The cost to consumers for the new service is still to be finalised, but will be higher than the £26.99 that is charged for the current three channels.

Digital set-top boxes with smart cards will replace the analogue decoders.   Existing subscribers will receive a set-top box free of charge and new customers will have to buy one.  The decoder monthly rental charge will stop.  The boxes will offer a parental control facility allowing households to put in place their own viewing restrictions.

A limitation is that only a single channel can be viewed at any one time.  The current analogue system allows a household using a decoder to watch multiple channels simultaneously.  This will not be possible with the new digital system because of the rebroadcast agreement.

Adam Yon, Networks Manger said 'The DVB-T2 broadcasting is the latest technology used, so for once St Helena is ahead in the game.'
