South Atlantic Media Services Ltd, actually began life under a different name.
The St Helena Broadcasting (Guarantee) Corporation Ltd, was registered as a company in St Helena on 17 August 2011. A conflict with the name and a similarly registered company meant we needed to change.
We therefore, publicly, became South Atlantic Media Services, Ltd., on 13 February 2013, which also coincided with World Radio Day.
The newspaper 'The Sentinel' launched on 29 March 2012, selling in print locally and available for free download on our website. The website was launched on Sunday 1 April 2012.
On 22 December 2012 our first FM radio transmitter was turned on and test broadcasts began, carrying BBC World Service and regular bulletins of the SAMS St Helena News. On World Radio Day 2013 (13 February) we launched our first hosted content, the 'Sunrise' morning show and the name of the channel was revealed as, SAMS Radio 1. That same day at 4pm the 'Afternoon Drive' show as launched ('Drive'since suspended).
SAMS Radio 1 now streams live 24/7 from our website (see link top right of page)
SAMS Radio 2 is our second radio channel that carries BBC World Service, 24/7.
SAMS is currently based in the building at the far side of Castle Gardens. Our address: The Media Centre, Castle Gardens, Jamestown, St Helena, STHL 1ZZ, South Atlantic Ocean. (the building more commonly known as the Audit Office).
The current SAMS team:
Richard Wallis (CEO), Anne Clarke, Liam Yon, Cyril Gunnell, Julie Fowler, Nicole Peters and August Graham.
